Whenuakura Island

Whangamata is home to one of New Zealand’s most beautiful coastal attractions. For a long time Whenuakura Wildlife Sanctuary, (often referred to as Donut Island), was a local secret. This has changed in recent years as this pacific treasure is quickly becoming a ‘must do’ New Zealand adventure. Guardians of the islands and Whangamata locals encourage you to treat the islands with respect to preserve their future.

Hauturu Island

Hauturu Island

Hauturu or Clark Island is accessible by wading at low tide and is popular in summer months for rock-pool fossickers and kayakers. Whenuakura, sometimes known as Donut Island, sits about a kilometre east of the southern part of Whangamata beach (Otahu Beach). Tuatara roamed on Whenuakura until fairly recently. Whenuakura Island has a large collapsed blow hole which has formed a small beach inside the island - hence the alternative name.

Moana Point Reserve

Moana Point Reserve

Start at the Moana Anu Anu Reserve as you enter Whangamata (before the causeway) and look for signage through Moana Point Reserve that directs walkers along the grassed trail. At Awarua Point look out for the plaque marking the place where Whangamata’s first ever shop was located. There are interesting views of the marina from this site. From the other side of the causeway a footpath links up to the back of the supermarket and behind the industrial area which backs onto the harbour.
